Day 1 – Arrive Istanbul

Arrival in Istanbul, the historic gateway bridging Europe and Asia. You will be met at the airport with assistance and transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 2 – Istanbul Full Day Tour: The Cradle of Empires

Today, immerse yourself in the Sultanahmet Center, the heart of the “Old City” where the Byzantine Christian and Ottoman Islamic Empires left their grandest marks.

  • Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom): One of the greatest marvels of sacred architecture, constructed as a majestic cathedral in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian, standing for centuries as the heart of Eastern Christendom.
  • Blue Mosque: Facing Hagia Sophia, famous for its blue Iznik tiles and its unique six minarets, showcasing Ottoman architectural grandeur.
  • Hippodrome: The center of sports and political life in Constantinople. View the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpentine Column, and the German Fountain.
  • Topkapi Palace: The imperial residence of the Ottoman Sultans, exhibiting legendary collections, including the Sacred Relics section.
  • Grand Bazaar: One of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, alive with vibrant trade. (B, L)

Day 3 – Izmir, Ephesus & St. John – The First Church of Revelation

Take an early morning flight to Izmir and drive directly to Ephesus, the most prominent of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 2:1-7).

  • Explore the vast Greco-Roman ruins of Ephesus, walking the ancient streets where the Apostle Paul preached for over two years, caused the silversmith riots (Acts 19), and where he later wrote his Epistle to the Ephesians.
  • Visit the Basilica of St. John, built over the tomb of the Apostle John, who came to Ephesus with the Virgin Mary.
  • Ascend Mount Solmissos to visit the House of the Virgin Mary, her final peaceful abode on earth where she spent her last days in the care of St. John. After this spiritually profound day, drive to Pamukkale for dinner and overnight stay. (L, D)

Day 4 – Hierapolis, Laodicea, Philadelphia & Sardis – The Lukewarm, the Faithful, and the Dying Churches

In the morning, explore Hierapolis, where Philip the Evangelist was martyred for his faith. Witness the stunning white calcium terraces (travertines) of Pamukkale, whose lukewarm waters were famously used as a metaphor for the nearby church. We then follow the path of the Book of Revelation:

  • Laodicea: The church rebuked for being “neither cold nor hot” (Rev. 3:14-22). Walk the newly excavated ancient streets of this wealthy trade center.
  • Philadelphia (Alasehir): The Church of the Open Door, highly praised for its enduring faithfulness (Rev. 3:7-13). View the massive remaining pillars of an early Christian basilica.
  • Sardis: Once the wealthy capital of Lydia, rebuked as a church that was “dead” despite its reputation (Rev. 3:1-6). Explore the spectacular Roman gymnasium and the massive ancient Jewish Synagogue. After these deeply symbolic visits, drive to Pergamon for dinner and overnight stay. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – Thyatira, Pergamon & Flight to Istanbul – Satan's Throne

After breakfast, delve into the prophetic history of the remaining churches:

  • Pergamon (Bergama): The church described by St. John as the place where “Satan’s throne is” (Rev. 2:12-17). Climb to the breathtaking Acropolis and visit the Red Basilica, a massive Roman temple later converted into a grand Christian church.
  • Thyatira: Praised for its love and service but warned against the false prophet Jezebel (Rev. 2:18-29). See the ancient remains in the heart of modern Akhisar.
  • Smyrna (Izmir): One of the two churches that received no rebuke, exhorted to “be faithful unto death” (Rev. 2:8-11). Take a brief tour of the city, honoring the legacy of early Christian martyrs like Polycarp. Evening transfer to Izmir Airport for your flight to Istanbul. Transfer to your hotel for overnight stay. (B, L)
